In the run up to Chinese New Year, we’ve also made kueh bangkit.
How good is homemade?
Well, it’s time for making Chinese New Year goodies again.
On Thursday, I went to JB for another bad haircut and groceries and many of the shops were selling homemade cookies.
Besides a sticker for the Chinese symbol of “Luck”, they bore no other marks. It would be impossible to tell what went into those cookies and who made them.
If the China melamine milk scandal had happened during Chinese New Year, I think it’d be an utter mess trying to trace the source of foods and a lot more people could’ve been adversely affected.
And so today, we began our own “homemade” factory. And I threw my father off the production line, two minutes after he joined in to help us.
Was it terribly evil of me?
Believe It or Not
Remember The Greatest American Hero?
Ah yes, ordinary man dons a red suit from aliens and suddenly has unmanageable super powers. Can’t remember much from that show, except I looked forward to it every week.
Life was easier then. No one asked about USPs, for Interactive elements, yadda yadda. Just liked it.
I remember visiting my friends in Ipoh and singing the theme song together.
And now that I’ve done it again, I think the range of the song is surprisingly wide and difficult to sing.
I recorded this on different tracks as I found it hard to balance my ukulele with voice. And when I did that, I found it hard to keep the accompaniment in time…

NETS FlashPay Card and the case for free top-ups
Since my EZLink card disappeared from my wallet, I weighed the pros and cons of the two CEPAS compliant cards available in Singapore today: The EZLink Card and the NETS FlashPay Card.

From the picture, you can guess which card I went with.
But first, let me complain a bit.

Across the Universe
It’s been a while since I’ve recorded myself singing and I’ve to say, it isn’t pleasant.
To sing, keep time, read lyrics and recall chords is doubly, triply, quaduply hard.
And exhausting.
And actually quite terrible sounding when you hear you can’t sustain notes like you thought you could.
This is my 7th attempt and increasingly I made mistakes as I got tired.
You have been warned.

When I submitted my travel reviews at TripAdvisor, they sent me a coupon for a free 8″x8″ hardcover photo book containing 20 pages, worth US$29.99 at Shutterfly. All I had to do was to pay for shipping,
Looking up the shipping cost, it’d cost me US$7.99 to my friend’s address in the US where I’d be staying, so I decided to take up the offer to try out the quality of the prints.
Old Neighbourhood of Bukchon and Ewha Womans University
Who would’ve thought a big city would fall asleep on 1st January?
Turns out this happens in Seoul. Major department stores are closed. Some small shops open.
And it turns out majority of the galleries and shops in the Bukchon & Samcheongdong area, found between the two famous palaces of Gyeongbok Palace and Changdeok Palace, were closed.

Garosugil, Insadong, Dongdaemun Markets, Cheonggyecheon at Night
New Year’s Eve and we decided to not set the alarm clock as we had to the day before. But the body clock, all out of whack got us up around 8am.
We got to the trendy gingko tree lined street of Garosugil by 9:30am and discovered half the shops were closed for the new year, and those that were planning on being open only opened their doors around 11am.

The DMZ
On 30th December, the third day of our visit to Seoul, we headed to the demilitarized zone along the border separating North from South.

After so many expectations, getting a 7-day pre-tour approval to visit it because Singapore is under the UN’s list of restricted countries, making sure we didn’t break any of the dress code, waking up early to get to the tour office by 8am, the tour was a letdown.
