Music and First (published) recording on the Zoom H2

For the past five years, I’d been thinking of doing a bit of music more seriously.

I’ve never been good at music. And no matter how many lessons I was forced to take, I never did well in it like my sisters did.

Both my elder sisters have perfect pitch and they caught on the whole logic of how chords work and so on. I struggled at every step.

Captions for photos

Remember English class in primary school? They’d give you a picture and you’d have to make up a caption for it. And later on, it became make up a story for it?

Well, when I took this picture, outside Novena Square, I was thinking I could come up with a good caption for this photo.

But it’s not easy to be funny, smart and clever all the time. Let alone any of the time.

Singapore’s Medal Haul at Paralympics

Two bronzes, a silver and a gold. All thanks to Laurentia Tan (Equestrian) and Yip Pin Xiu (Swimming).

After so much fanfare, crowd support, media coverage, financial support for the Olympics team, the performances from the lesser known disabled sportsmen, is truly something to be admired.

There were no tears like cry baby ping pong player Gao Ning who blamed his coach for not being court side to help him defeat his opponent.

Geriatric Race

I was just thinking about my post where I mentioned that Singapore needs a national sport – something that Singaporeans naturally would be motivated to play because they simply love it.

It seemed ping pong was the answer. Singapore has invested so much into the sport. Our entire team has been transplanted out of their home country and away from their families for our selfish desire for a medal. And now, we actually have a silver medal after our 48 year drought.

While others are asking when the next medal will come, the question I think is more important is who is going to win it. I said, hopefully, it’ll be a born in Singapore Singaporean.

But now, I’m not so sure. Not so sure that ping pong should be our national sport.

Thirty Four Thirty Fives in One Room

.. and then some thirty sixes bitterly turning thirty seven in January.

Mints for the reunion

It was my class’ 20th reunion and we had a gathering on 8th August 2008. Whoever decided to organise this, didn’t really care that we had to miss the Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony for this.

But we didn’t seem to miss it. Maybe if it had been a whole bunch of boys, that might have been different.

The Kampong Girl, Silverware and US-made products

This morning I woke up at 6am because the electricity tripped. The maid was ironing my mom’s skirt for work. Why she had to do it so early in the morning instead of last night? I don’t know.

All I know is I’m the one who had to wake up, find the key to the gatepost and re-instate our modern quality of life because my parents didn’t even know the electricity was cut off. Even if they had known, would they have bothered?

After that, I simply couldn’t get back to sleep. The dogs also got excited and woke up early.

As a result, I started polishing my mother’s silverware which, due to long storage, I’d taken out and soaked in lemon juice, dish washing liquid and aluminum foil, overnight. And as I got sleepier, the dogs went back to sleep, full from their meal, I pressed on polishing up silver that hadn’t seen light of day after a grand total of 4 dinners many years ago.
