So treat this as a boat trip.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And indeed, it was quite a picturesque one. The boat turned around and we were heading back toward the docks, when at the very last minute they came out. We can still claim to have seen dolphins, right?<\/p>\n<p>So into Inverness town we headed. In Gaelic, it means &#8220;Mouth of the River Ness&#8221;. And we left there in the late afternoon for Shin Falls.<\/p>\n<p>This time, we drove over Kessock Bridge and stuck to the highway before turning off the A9, onto the B9176 toward Falls of Shin and Lairg, where we planned to spend the night.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1903\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/joanneteo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012-08-20-165004-_R0016026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1903\" title=\"Bonar Bridge.\" src=\"https:\/\/joanneteo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012-08-20-165004-_R0016026.jpg\" alt=\"Bonar Bridge.\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joanneteo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012-08-20-165004-_R0016026.jpg 500w, https:\/\/joanneteo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/2012-08-20-165004-_R0016026-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bonar Bridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Falls of Shin were wonderful, spoiled only by the presence of those pesky midges. It was here that I started to feel their stinging bite. And the scars from their bites are still present all over me slowly fading away.<\/p>\n<p>Why were the Falls of Shin so wonderful? And I always had to pay to get to these places. This one was completely free.<\/p>\n<p>We spent quite a bit of time there, watching most of the salmon try, but not make it upstream. The rooms were very neat and clean and the setup practical. The attached bathrooms were well sized.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Brinklow was very welcoming and gave us tea and her sister&#8217;s fruitcake. We learnt that she had been in Singapore in the 60s with her husband who was in the army. Even though we didn&#8217;t know Mrs Brinklow, we were still saddened to learn that her husband just passed away late last year, as did her daughter not too long later, a victim of cancer. It is funny how you can learn quite a lot about people in a short span of time.<\/p>\n<p>I can still clearly recall Mrs Brinklow&#8217;s thoughtful tone as she said: &#8220;I always said there&#8217;d be more people in Scotland, if not for the midges.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: Events described here occurred on the 20th August 2012.
