Well, I’ve done it. Moved hosts from Dreamhost to A Small Orange. Did you even notice the downtime?
I will document my move later, so that in future it’ll be easier for me to make a move again if I need to.
Dreamhost is not too bad. Support is pretty good, but sometimes they tend to ignore follow up questions.
The reason why I left Dreamhost is that lately their network has been wonky. And following this juvenile apology from the owners of Dreamhost, I decided this wasn’t a professional enough company.
This is not the first time they’ve been down in the 11 months I’ve hosted with them, so I think it’s not a good sign.
I hope A Small Orange will be a better host. They don’t oversell their plans and they’ve been pretty responsive thus far. Even though they give two months free if you sign up for a year, I decided to go for a monthly scheme. If they’re no good, I’m hopping over to MediaLayer.
The problem with A Small Orange and MediaLayer is a lot more of the WordPress and Gallery installs and upgrades are DIY. Yes, A Small Orange has Fantastico. Even then, I get the feeling they prefer users to do it on their own.
