How to be a screenwriter

Exactly eight days ago, on America’s Independence Day, 4th of July, I received this e-mail from an unknown someone:

Hi Joanne,

Very sorry to bother you, as you’re probably very busy.

I have a friend who is very, very passionate about become a screenwriter for tv and films too. However, she is feeling very lost at the moment, and finding it very difficult to find out how to get her foot into the industry’s writing scene. I was wondering if you might have any advice for her? How can she move towards her dream of becoming a screenwriter?

Thank you very much and all the best! : )

Sincerely,
D-

I have yet to reply to the email although my immediate response would have been this:

A progress report

I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve written in my blog. I don’t know how people blog about their lives every few minutes or hours. Why is it that they have so much happening in their lives that is worth telling everyone about and I don’t?

When Right Angles go Wrong

What does it say about a person, even a company when they agree to do one thing and act differently?

As you read previously, The Right Angle agreed to give me a cheque on the 24th for half the amount owed and a post dated cheque for the other half. The entire amount is overdue more than 5 months at this time.

The Right Angle Obtuse About Payment

Well, as some of you know, I’ve had difficulty getting The Right Angle to pay me for work completed in March this year.

Because of warnings from others, I insisted that I be paid in parts as work was completed. And I’m glad I did. During the project, I had to refuse to submit further work twice because payment had been delayed. Still, I completed the project and The Right Angle owed me 30% to be paid in 30 days after the final script.

Needless to say, 30 days passed. The last episode of the show aired even before this 30 day period was up. And still today, I’m waiting for money.

Calling “Action” : The drama and comedy

So I got a chance to speak to Jason Chan, (whom I’ve just discovered is a Malaysian – thanks to Wikipedia, where I also discovered that Jason Chan has a fan site! Wahhh!) about film / tv sets.

It all started when I told him how much I enjoyed watching his performance in a particular scene (one tiny little scene that would seem insignificant in light of all the others that he did) on Parental Guidance (PG). Jason Chan plays Terenece the ex-fiance of Ling (Jessica Hester Hsuan) in this show that also stars Adrian Pang. Continue reading “Calling “Action” : The drama and comedy”
