First Photos from my Yashica GSN

Okay, so I’ve got the first two rolls of film from my Yashica GSN.

I am pleased. The GSN was fixed nicely. No light leaks. And I notice from the shots during sunset it tends to make the light look redder than it actually was. Sweet.

The first roll, I didn’t wind up properly and accidentally exposed some shots from my Pulau Sibu trip, but many made it and have been uploaded to my gallery of the trip. Also played with rendering some of the colour shots in black and white.

Also took some shots of Sumo. But when it comes to animals, shooting on film can become a very costly affair. Still, again, I got some fantastic light of him sitting in the sunset. Again, these shots are in my gallery of animals and plants.

Here are the others. Enjoy.

Sumo showing his better side under the lamp post

Sumo shows his best side under a street lamp. Superia 400. Yashica GSN. 45mm 1.7. It was underexposed, on close inspection, Sumo is slightly blurred as he moved. I used a bit of levels to bring up the mid-tones. But that’s it.

Overcast at Lower Pierce Reservoir

Typical shot at Lower Pierce Reservoir. Superia 400. Taken around 4:30pm. I’m really impressed with the shadow details under the bridge. There was strong sunlight coming from the right and the day was overcast. A tough shot with the harsh light.

The Yellow Boat at Lower Pierce Reservoir

What I quite enjoy with this camera, even without any filter, there’s a bit of vignetting around the corners. I like that bit of imperfection. People are always talking about vignetting like it’s a bad thing.

Shade

I really liked this scene when I shot it. The sun is getting lower but the photo gave a much redder hue than in actuality. I liked the shadow of the tree and then the other forms of shade one can get from the sun – from the physical tree and then under those man-made shelter. It’s such a perfect shadow.

Pity the imperfect shot. Would it have been better from a high angle? I might have been part of the shadow then. I still like it though.

The Red Path (vertical)

The Red Path (horizontal)

I took these two shots one after the other. I was looking at the light and the shadows of the path. I couldn’t quite decide which was a better orientation then. Now, looking at it I prefer the horizontal one. What do you think?

Sunset at Lower Pierce

I used the tree to hide the actual sun and then did a quick dodge of the foreground on the computer. I think it worked out pretty well.

Relax

I think this was a lucky shot. I was playing “Fetch” with Sumo down the hill and saw this couple sitting on the bench looking at the sunset. It is heavily cropped because I was in such a hurry I didn’t straighten the horizon before pressing the shutter. Still, I think it’s very nice. I call this shot “Relax”.

Avoid

Finally, my attempt at zone focusing. The method is to use depth of field, estimate a distance and get the picture in focus without looking at the viewfinder. This was shot at waist level. A lot of my shots in this roll used zone focusing as well and I only looked the the viewfinder to do composition. I find it especially useful when shooting shots of Sumo as he’s always running around.

Okay, that’s it! The rest of the film pictures are in the abovementioned galleries
